Owls double-up Tigers, advance to NCAA third round

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Ashley Quinn and Caroline O'Neil both posted five-point games Sunday and boosted the Kenyon College Owls to an 18-9 victory over the DePauw University Tigers in the second round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament.

The win was the Owls' third over DePauw in a span of 16 days. Kenyon defeated DePauw in the regular season by a 20-4 count and then topped the Tigers 18-6 in the semifinal round of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

Sunday's win improved Kenyon's overall record 18-1 and, more importantly, kept the season alive, as the Owls now move on to NCAA Tournament third-round competition to face the winner of Sunday evenings's game between Pomona-Pitzer and George Fox.

DePauw, which closed out its season with a 12-6 record, gave No. 21-ranked Kenyon all it could handle in the first half of play. Abby Keane logged the game's first goal for the Tigers and she went on to score three more times before the half. While DePauw's only lead of the game was 1-0, the Tigers never got behind by more than three over the first 30 minutes of play.

Kate Lengel scored two of Kenyon's first six goals to give the Owls a 6-3 lead at the mid-way mark of the second quarter, but Keane followed up with her last two goals of the half to pull DePauw with one at 6-5.

Before the second quarter closed, each team scored a goal in a player advantage situation. In between those, Kenyon's Lily Mason scored, which eventually led to an 8-6 halftime edge for the home team.

Similar to the previous two competitions, the second half belonged to the Kenyon defense. Sunday, the Owls allowed just three goals over the final 30 minutes of play. That made way for the offense to create some separation and put the game away.

Maddie Garner and Spencer Kirsch both scored twice to start the half and bumped Kenyon's lead to 12-6. DePauw got two back, but at 12-8, the Tigers would never get closer than four goals the rest of the way.

After Quinn netted Kenyon's first goal of the final quarter, O'Neil stepped up late and pumped in four of the Owls' last five scores to secure the win. O'Neil now has 60 goals, 20 assists, and 80 points on the season. Her 60 goals are tied for the sixth-best single-season mark in program history, while her total of 80 points ranks fifth best.

O'Neil's five points were brought about by four goals and an assist, Quinn's five-spot was produced from two goals and three assists. Kirsch ended up with four points on two goals and two assists, while Garner and Tatumn Eccleston both chipped in with three-point games.

Nola Garand got the start in goal for Kenyon, which outshot DePauw, 35-26. She played the first 30 minutes before giving way to Delaney Gallagher. Garand made three saves in 30 minutes of work and Gallagher made five in 27 minutes of work.

As the NCAA bracket unfolds, Kenyon will stand as one of just 16 teams remaining by the end of the day.
