Owls trample Tigers on way to NCAC final

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team's win streak and undefeated season spilled over to postseason play Wednesday, as the Owls chalked up an 18-6 victory over the DePauw University Tigers in the semifinal round of the 2023 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament.

The victory boosted Kenyon's overall record to 17-0 and lifted the top-seeded Owls into the NCAC Tournament Championship game, which they will host at 1 p.m. on Saturday. They'll face the winner of tonight's other NCAC semifinal between Denison University and Ohio Wesleyan University.

Kenyon, which finished its regular-season schedule last week with a 20-4 win at DePauw, put an end Wednesday to the 2023 season for the Tigers, who finished with an 11-5 record and were the No. 4-seeded team in the conference tournament.

A pair of seniors in Tatumn Eccleston and Caroline O'Neil led the offensive charge for the Owls. Eccleston posted a game-high six points on two goals and four assists. She now leads both the team and all players in the NCAC with a total of 44 assists on the season. That assist total also ranks as the second-best single-season mark in program history.

O'Neil turned in a game-high four goals and recorded one assist. Her updated season stat line now has her leading the team, as well as all NCAC players, with 55 goals and 73 points. Both her goal total and point total are one shy of what she finished with last season.

In all, ten different Kenyon players scored against DePauw. In addition to Eccleston and O'Neil, those with two-goal games included Ella Murphy, Maddie Garner, Kate Lengel, and Lily Mason. Murphy had an assist to get her to a three-point game, while Mallory Brophy and Spencer Kirsch each had one goal and one assist.

Most of the Kenyon offense was started by Julia Losey, another senior. She racked up a season-high 12 draw controls, giving her 70 this year. Losey also recorded two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Kenyon raced out to leads of 4-1 and 6-2 before closing out the first quarter with an 8-3 advantage. Rain started to come down for most of the rest of the game and put a bit of a damper on the attacks. The Owls, however, scored five more times in the second quarter and owned a 13-5 halftime lead.

Things really slowed down after that. Kenyon scored five more times in the second half, while allowing just one DePauw goal in the final 35:28 of play. Sophomore Nola Garand again got the start in the Owls' goal. She played the first 30 minutes, made five saves, and improved her personal record to 16-0. Senior Delaney Gallagher took over in the second half, made one save, and allowed just one goal to lower her goals against average to 4.62 in roughly 260 minutes of work this season.

In front of those two, the Kenyon defense limited DePauw to just 13 shots throughout the game. The Owls also forced 22 turnovers, including seven failed clears.
