Owls’ NCAA run comes to an end at Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Kenyon College women's tennis team's impressive 2023 season came to a close Saturday after the host Carnegie Mellon University Tartans rang up a 5-2 win over the Owls in the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

One day after rallying from a 2-1 doubles deficit, the No. 32-ranked Owls had the script flipped by the No. 14-ranked Tartans. Kenyon jumped ahead early Saturday, taking two of the three doubles matches, but Carnegie Mellon whipped up four straight wins in singles play to survive and advance.

Carnegie Mellon tallied the first team point of the day, taking the No. 1 doubles match by an 8-2 count. Kenyon came right back with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles, where junior Eleni Dakos and first-year Shadia Amado Aguad defeated Manuela Van Cotthem and Divya Venkatarama.

The Owls then pulled ahead 2-1 after senior Catriona MacIntosh and sophomore Natalie Connelly put together an 8-6 victory over Zoe Angell and Anna Chow.

That, however, would be the last team point Kenyon would record. Carnegie Mellon charged back with singles wins at No. 2, 3, 5, and 6 to pull out the overall team victory. The Tartans improved their record to 21-5 and claimed their spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament's quarterfinal round.

As a team, Kenyon closed out its season with a 20-5 record. First-years Eleni Lazaridou and Allaire Berl will continue on as invitees to the NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Championships, which are roughly two weeks away.
