ALMA, Mich. -- The Kenyon College women's soccer team continued its stellar start to the season by securing a 3-1 win on the road against Alma College (0-1). The victory was Kenyon's second in as many days and outings as the Owls improved to 2-0 on the young 2023 campaign.
Kenyon put the pedal to the metal early, taking three shots and earning three corner kicks within the first 14 minutes of action. An attempt by Eun Hae Lillig in the 12th minute narrowly missed after hitting the right post, but the Owls' pressure paid off shortly thereafter as Kayla Arone found the bottom right of the net in the 14th minute.
Lilly Lucas prevented an immediate push for an Alma equalizer with a save, and the score stayed 1-0 in Kenyon's favor deep into the first half. Not content with a one-goal advantage, the Owls earned a corner kick in the 42nd minute that gave them a chance to double their lead. Elyse Judge nearly converted the set piece a few seconds later before Alma's keeper made a nice save, but Alex Sokolik was there to put in the rebound and put the Owls up 2-0 just before halftime.
After outshooting Alma 7-5 in the first frame, Kenyon outshot the Scots 7-3 in the second half. However, Alma made one of their attempts count in the 53rd minute, cutting the Owls' edge to 2-1. Fortunately for Kenyon, the Owls quickly halted the Alma momentum and reclaimed their two-goal lead.
Like the second score, Kenyon's third goal came off another corner kick. The ball bounced around and off multiple players in front of the goal, but Lillig was the last to get a touch as her second shot found the mark to put the Owls up 3-1 in the 57th minute.
Alma tested first-year goalkeeper Ariel Kite a few minutes later, but she stood firm and secured the first two saves of her collegiate career on what would be the Scots' final two shots.
After playing two games in two days over the season's opening weekend, Kenyon will have a week to prepare for its next contest. The Owls will return home to Gambier and host John Carroll University (0-1) on Mavec Field next Saturday, September 9. The match, Kenyon's home opener, is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
