Owls honor seniors with a 6-0 triumph

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Celebrating Senior Day on Saturday at Mavec Field, the Kenyon College women's soccer team made it a memorable game, scoring six times in a shutout of the visiting Marietta College Pioneers.

All eight Kenyon seniors played in the game and two found their way on to the scoresheet. Starting things off for the class was Sadie Gould, who netted the Owls first goal by heading it home off a corner kick from Hailey Moss.

Alex Sokolik then put another goal on the board for Kenyon--and the senior class. She did so in the game's 33rd minute off another corner kick. When the kick came in, it pinballed around the Marietta box until Sokolik took control and fired in her second goal of the season.

Sophomore Jenna Michel added one more goal for the Owls in the half and the rout was on.

Junior Eun Hae Lillig opened up scoring in the second half after breaking free on the right wing and putting together an impressive drive through three defenders. She let her shot loose just inside the top of the box and it found its mark in the lower left corner of the Pioneers' net.

From that point on, junior Morgan Baker took over the Kenyon offense, scoring the team's final two goals. The first of the two came in the 55th minute when Baker charged forward into the box to collect a loose ball. She settled between two defenders and ripped her shot toward the same spot that Lillig found roughly seven minutes earlier.

Finally, the Kenyon scoring ended when Baker intercepted a bad Marietta pass within the box. That action put her face-to-face with the goalkeeper. Baker reloaded and her shot, again, went over the goal line into the left side of the net.

Kenyon outshot Marietta 25-7 and the Owls' six goals were the most in a game since a 6-0 road win over Hiram on October 22 last season.

On the season, the Owls, now sporting a 4-1-3 record, have scored 18 goals. That total is just four less than the 2022 team scored for the entire season.

The Owls will look to keep the offensive flow going in their next game, which is slated for Wednesday evening, at home, against Muskingum University.
