Owls draw with Eagles in defensive battle

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Kenyon College Owls finished with a 1-1 tie against the University of Mary Washington Eagles in a Saturday afternoon women's soccer non-conference matchup. This was the fourth tie of the year for the Owls, who have started the season strong, losing only one of their first 10 games.

The Eagles (5-4-1) came out aggressively, as they fired off two shots, one of which hit the crossbar, around the two-minute mark. About seven minutes later, Maci Landel found the net for Mary Washington after using an assist from Eliza Franklin.

Despite the early goal, the Kenyon defense put together a strong performance, as it limited the Eagles to only five shots on goal. Owls goalkeeper Gabi Pesticci finished the game with four saves.

Junior Julia Igoe fired off a shot in the 45th minute, though Eagles goalie Morgan Hickok made a save. The first half concluded with a 1-0 lead for the Eagles.

With the defense holding firm, the Owls tied up the score in the second half. Kenyon's intensive offensive pressure led to an own goal deflection off of an opposing defender for the final tally in the 50th minute.

Pesticci made three key saves in the second half to hold the tie and help move the Owls overall record to 5-1-4.

Kenyon now has a week off before a huge matchup on the road against Denison University next Saturday. The Owls will enter that matchup with a chip on their shoulder, as Denison knocked them out of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament last season.
