Denison outlasts Kenyon in defensive battle

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Denison University Big Red needed just one goal Friday to chalk up a 1-0 win over the host Kenyon College Owls during North Coast Athletic Conference women's soccer action from Mavec Field.

The loss was Kenyon's second in a row by one goal, but also its fourth consecutive shutout, as the team fell to 1-8-0 overall and 0-2-0 in NCAC play. On the other side of the field, the win was Denison's fourth straight and the Big Red improved their record to 7-3-2, including a 2-0-0 conference mark.

While Kenyon's defense was good, Denison's was a bit better, logging its sixth shutout of the season while holding the Owls to just four shots and one corner kick. None of the Kenyon shots were on goal and the one corner the Owls took was easily gathered in by Big Red goalkeeper Molly Noga, who subbed in at halftime for starter Wynne Hague.

The Owls defense allowed 17 shots, but just six of those were on target. Kenyon goalkeeper Ariel Kite made five saves on those six shots on goal. The one she couldn't get to was Denison's second shot of the game.

Nine minutes from the start, the Big Red tallied the lone goal as a Kenyon throw-in was stolen down the left sideline by Avery Butler. She kept moving down the sideline with the ball and then crossed a short pass to the left side of the box. The pass was met by Mara McGlone, who directed her shot into the far right side of the Kenyon goal.

Kenyon's offense managed three shots in the first half and just one in the second. Two shots came from Emily Copeland and the other two were taken by Jenna Michel and Jamie Murphy.

The Owls have the weekend off and will return to competition at home on Wednesday against Wittenberg University.
