SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Kenyon College field hockey team suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against the Wittenberg University Tigers in a closely contested North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup on Saturday. The loss drops the Owls to an 8-6 overall record and a 4-4 conference standing, while the undefeated Tigers (9-0, 7-0 NCAC) maintained their grip on the top spot in the conference.

From the opening whistle to the final seconds, both teams showcased their competitive spirit in a match that kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Wittenberg struck first when Maddy Krasnow found the back of the net just seven minutes into the game. Despite being outshot 10-2 in the first half, Kenyon's defense held strong, with senior Ella Haskins nearly equalizing in the closing minutes, only to be denied by Wittenberg's goalkeeper Izzy Thompson.

The Tigers extended their lead early in the second half, but the 2-0 deficit seemed to ignite a fire in the Owls. Around the 40-minute mark, Kenyon's offense surged, led by the dynamic trio of Raigan Hutter, Maren Lawrence, and Grace Lane. Their persistence paid off when Lane finally broke through Wittenberg's defense to put Kenyon on the scoreboard, the senior's 12 goal this season.

Kenyon's defensive unit, featuring Darcy Miller, Liz Cramer, Justine Cole, and first-year standout Zady Hasse, put up a valiant effort throughout the contest. Their tenacious play, particularly in defending penalty corners, kept the high-powered Wittenberg offense in check. In goal, Megan Lydon's steady presence was crucial, as she made two critical saves on four shots faced.

The final minutes of the match were nothing short of thrilling. In a bold move, Kenyon pulled Lydon from the goal in a last-ditch effort to equalize. The strategy nearly paid off as Lane unleashed a powerful shot in the dying seconds, only to be thwarted by a spectacular save from the Wittenberg goalkeeper.

While the loss makes it harder for the Owls to make the playoffs, the team's resilience was on full display throughout the match. The Owls will look to finish their season on a high note as they return home for their final game on The Field at Benson Bowl. Kenyon will face off against Allegheny College on Saturday, October 26th, in what will be the final home game for the Owls seniors and the team's penultimate regular-season game.
