GAMBIER, Ohio -- In a display of defensive fortitude, the Kenyon College women's soccer team (1-9-2, 0-3-2 NCAC) earned a hard-fought draw against the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops (9-4-2, 2-1-2 NCAC) on Mavec Field. The Battling Bishops ranked second in the conference heading into today's matchup, so the result of this game marks another positive step forward for the young Owls squad, who have shown steady improvement in recent matchups.
Despite being outshot 11-3, Kenyon's defensive unit proved impenetrable. The backline of Anna Taggart, Julianna Granetzke, Brooke Heis, and Chanda Maambo maintained their composure throughout the match, while sophomore goalkeeper Ariel Kite recorded her first shutout of the season with five crucial saves. Kite's performance further cements her position as one of the conference's top shot-stoppers, bringing her season save total to 63.
The first half saw an evenly matched contest, with Ohio Wesleyan recording four shots to Kenyon's three. The Owls maintained a slight edge in corner kicks (4-3) while demonstrating disciplined play with zero fouls compared to Ohio Wesleyan's three.
The highlight of the opening period came in the 15th minute when Kite made a spectacular diving save. After racing across her goal from the left side, she managed to palm away a powerful long-range effort from the Battling Bishops. Three minutes later, Jamie Murphy tested the Ohio Wesleyan goalkeeper with a promising free kick, though it was ultimately saved. Murphy also served up a dangerous corner kick earlier in the 14th minute, but the Owls could not convert the set piece.
The second half saw increased pressure from Ohio Wesleyan, but Kenyon's defense remained steadfast. Kenyon's best chance at a goal came off of a pass in the 62nd minute. Taggart passed back into the box following a Murphy corner, and while the pass didn't find any waiting Owls, it did take a tricky bounce over the head of OWU's keeper and bounce dangerously off the crossbar, narrowly missing out on turning into a Kenyon goal.
On the other end, a tense moment arose in the 87th minute when the Battling Bishops sent a shot just over the crossbar. The Owls had a late opportunity to snatch victory with a corner kick in the 88th minute, but the attempt sailed over the OWU goal and out of bounds as the Owls were unable to get a shot out of it.
While Kenyon's offense was limited in the second half, their defensive resilience against a top conference opponent showcases the team's growing competitive spirit. The result represents a significant achievement for the Owls, who continue to demonstrate improvement as the season progresses.
Kenyon will look to build on this momentum when they host DePauw University in their next and final home match on Saturday, October 26, at 1:00 p.m.
