Top-ranked Owls prevail in clash with Big Red

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's swimming and diving team put together a strong start, and a strong finish, to win its annual rivalry meet with Denison University on Saturday morning. The Owls, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III, chalked up a final score of 180-120 over the Big Red, who came into the meet ranked at No. 4.

Kenyon got off to a great start by winning the first three events, beginning with the meet-opening 200-yard medley relay. The Owls' winning foursome included Lisa Torrecillas-Jouault, Jennah Fadely, Sydney Geboy, and Gwen Eisenbeis. They clocked in at 1:43.79, a tenth of a second ahead of Denison's entry.

Bengisu Caymaz and Molly Haag tacked on the next two wins for Kenyon. Caymaz was first to the wall in the 1,000-yard freestyle, touching in 10:10.70, while Haag followed up with a winning time of 1:53.66 in the 200-yard freestyle.

The rival teams then began to trade event wins. After a Denison victory in the 100-yard backstroke, Fadely got back in the water and claimed the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke. Her winning time was 1:02.48. The Big Red won the 200-yard butterfly, but Kenyon countered with Gwen Eisenbeis' victory in the 50-yard freestyle. She completed that sprint in 23.87.

Eisenbeis' result sparked another run for the Owls, who won the next four events. In order, Geboy took the 100-yard freestyle in 52.01, Torrecillas-Jouault won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:05.81, Fadely tallied her third win, taking the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:17.04, and Caymaz capped off the streak by clocking in at 4:56.84 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Over the last two swimming events, the Owls finished strong and closed out the Big Red. First-year Tuva Siegel won her first collegiate individual event, claiming the top spot in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:30.80. That was followed by Kenyon's final win, which came in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Eisenbeis, Torrecillas-Jouault, Fadely, and Geboy slammed the door shut with the winning time of 1:35.32.

In all, Kenyon won 11 of the 14 swimming events, including the two relays. Denison won three swimming events and swept the two diving events.

The Owls will now set dual meets aside for a while. Next up on the schedule is the annual Total Performance Invitational, a three-day home meet that kicks off Thursday, November 21.
