Owls log Senior Day win against Spartans

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Celebrating Senior Day the right way, the Kenyon College women's swimming and diving team won 13 events Saturday afternoon and coasted to a 228-108 home dual-meet victory against the Spartans from Case Western Reserve University.

Those seniors getting well-deserved recognition before the meet started were Lauren Barrabee, Sydney Buchman, Claire Fergusson, Anna Clare Fleenor, Sarah Hoffman, Katarina Ilic, Sydney McCallie, Sophie Schmitz and Caleigh Wukitch.

During competition, the Owls had three swimmers who won an individual event with both a personal-best time, as well as an NCAA 'B' cut time. That trio was led by Buchman, who claimed the top spot in the 200-yard breaststroke by clocking in at 2:19.67 and clipped her previous best time of 2:19.81 set a couple weeks ago.

The other two included in that trio were junior Gabrielle Wei and sophomore Ceyda Yazici. Wei won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.50, topping her previous best of 1:02.67. Earlier in the meet, Yazici recorded her best time and won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:50.60, shaving about a second-and-a-half off her previous best.

Other Kenyon swimmers that won events and posted 'B' cut times, but did not set personal-bests were juniors Sydney Geboy and Jennah Fadely. Geboy won the 100-yard freestyle in season-best 51.37 and, late in the meet, Fadely posted a 2:03.48 to win the 200-yard individual medley.

More highlights for Kenyon were produced by Jordan Herrera, another junior. She missed out on a 'B' cut, but notched a win in the 200-yard backstroke with a personal-best time of 2:03.75. Back at the start of the meet, Hoffman won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 10:29.94.

Rounding out the rest of Kenyon's individual-event winners were Lisa Torrecillas-Jouault, who was fastest in the 100-yard backstroke (57.05), Gwen Eisenbeis, who won the 50-yard freestyle (23.89), Molly Haag, who won the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.04) and Celia Ford, who took the 100-yard butterfly (56.49).

In diving, Kenyon's best finishes came from Fergusson and Ilic. Counting 11 dives, Fergusson placed second on the three-meter board (474.40) and Ilic was runner-up on the one-meter board (440.50). Both those outputs were personal collegiate-bests.

Finally, the Owls began and ended the meet with a pair of relay wins. Wukitch, Fadely, Ford and Geboy claimed first place in the meet-opening 200-yard medley relay. Their time of 1:42.34 was just one-hundredth of a second from tying the team's season-best. At the end of the competition, Torrecillas-Jouault joined Kate Bogan, Geboy and Eisenbeis to win the 200-yard freestyle in 1:34.36.

The dual meet was the last of the season for the Owls, who finished with a 4-3 mark and now look ahead to the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship, a four-day competition that begins on Wednesday, February 14 in Granville, Ohio.
