Comeback falls short, Knights best Owls

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team played its second neutral site game out of three in the "Spring Fling" Tournament held in Panama City Beach, Florida against the State University of New York College (SUNY) at Geneseo.

After bringing a seven-goal deficit to only one at the start of the fourth, the offense went quiet in the final frame and Owls' comeback came up just short, falling to the Knights 13-9.

Kenyon found itself down early, as the Knights scored the first three goals of the game. Ashley Quinn stopped the initial run at 3:03 in the first period with some help from a Lily Mason assist, but Geneseo went on to score the next five goals in the first and second quarters to end the first half at 8-1.

The Owls were held to one goal on six shots in the first half and lost the ground ball battle 15-6. However, once the second half came around, Kenyon started to hit its stride.

Leading scorer Kate Lengel got the comeback campaign started with two quick goals to bring the deficit to 8-3 at 12:53. After the Knights fired back to stop the run, Ali Hatfield and Lengel each scored on a free position shot and a man-up attempt, respectively. Genero scored again to set the score at 10-5 with five minutes to play in the quarter, but Blythe Karras, Mallory Brophy, and Mason all found twine to get the Owls to 10-9 entering the fourth quarter.

To open the fourth, Spencer Kirsch scored a free position shot to make it 10-9, as the Owls orchestrated an 8-2 run after halftime to get just one behind the Knights at 14:01. However, the offense failed to convert on its other fourth-quarter shots, as Geneseo goalkeeper Emily DeJohn saved every Kenyon shot in the final 15 minutes. Three Knights goals went unanswered in the fourth, and the Owls fell 13-9.

For the game, Nola Garand had 12 saves and Kenyon had a 7-to-3 advantage in free-position shots, but losing the ground ball, shot, and turnover margins proved to be the difference. Lengel and Hatfield led the effort, registering three points apiece.

The Owls' record falls to 2-3 on the season, and the squad will play its final game in the "Spring Fling" Tournament on Friday, March 15 against Westfield State University at 11:00 am (10:00 am CDST).
