Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Season opens with a bang for Owls offense

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The home opener for the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team and the debut of new head coach Angelica Gero could not have gone any better Saturday morning, as the Owls rolled to a 24-8 win over the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets.

The 24 goals scored were the most by a Kenyon team since a 26-2 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in March of the 2022 season. The goal total also tied The Field and Benson Bowl record and tied the third-best single-game output in program history.

A quarter of those goals were registered by senior Kate Lengel. She set the tone early, scoring the game's first tally and then tossing in two more scores before the first quarter concluded. She added two more goals in the second quarter and one in the third. She also had one assist, giving her career-best single game marks of six goals and seven points.

Sophomore Lily Mason matched Lengel's three-goal output in the first frame and the Owls wrapped up the first 15 minutes of play with a 9-3 advantage.

The second quarter went pretty much the same, as senior Maddie Garner kept winning draw controls, keeping the ball in Kenyon's possession. By the time the game was over, Garner amassed a dozen draws and boosted the Owls to a lopsided 29-6 advantage in the center circle.

The result was eight more second-quarter goals for the Kenyon offense, which continued to be powered by Lengel and Mason, as well as Ali Hatfield and Alex Tiatia. Their efforts put Kenyon ahead, 17-6, at the break.

The ten-goal margin put the running clock into play and Kenyon tacked on two more scores to start the second half. Baldwin Wallace never got closer than 12 goals the rest of the way.

Following Lengel's game-high seven points, both Mason and Mallory Brophy finished with five points. Mason's points were all on goals, while Brophy scored once and served up four assists. Hatfield had three goals and an assist for a four-point game. Tiatia ended up scoring twice, as did Blythe Karras.

In all, Kenyon, which outshot Baldwin Wallace 46-17, had 11 different goal scorers and 12 players who penciled in at least one point.

Junior goalkeeper Nola Garand didn't see an overload of action, but she did make four saves, scooped up four ground balls and caused one turnover.

The Yellow Jackets fell to 2-2 with the loss. Kenyon, now 1-0 for the third straight season, heads into the spring break portion of its schedule. The Owls will travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia to face University of Mary Washington on Thursday before heading to Florida, where a trio of games awaits.
