Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Scoring stalls in second half as Maroons top Owls

SALEM, Va. – The No. 22 Kenyon College women's lacrosse team took on No. 14 Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon, as the Owls completed the team's two-game slate in Virginia.

Despite taking an early lead to start the game and only trailing 9-8 at halftime, the Owls offense slowed significantly in the second half en route to a 16-12 loss in the top-25 battle of the birds.

To open the game, however, both offenses wasted no time getting the scoring underway, as the Owls and Maroons combined for 10 first-quarter goals. Kenyon (1-2) struck first as Ashley Quinn found Lily Mason just thirty seconds into the game to put the Owls ahead.

The Maroons fired back with two unassisted goals to take the lead at 9:42, but leading-scorer Kate Lengel netted two goals and Quinn added a third to spark a 3-0 scoring run in three minutes to give the Owls a 4-2 lead with 6:14 left in the quarter.

Roanoke (5-1) answered Kenyon's offensive outburst and scored five out of six goals through the end of the first and into the second. The Maroons cut the lead to 4-3 at 5:16, but Spencer Kirsch quickly restored the two-score cushion with her first goal of the season. Still, the Maroons would score four straight goals to take a 7-5 lead at 10:31 in the second.

Alex Tiatia was able to stop the run 25 seconds later, cashing in on a free position attempt to pull Kenyon to 7-6. Down the stretch, the offenses traded two goals apiece, as Lengel scored twice for the Owls to end the first half behind 9-8.

In the second half, the Roanoke defense clamped down on Lengel and the rest of the Owls offense, allowing only nine shots in the entire half compared to the 18 taken in the first. Even so, Kenyon was still able to capitalize on its offensive opportunities in the third, as Ali Hatfield tied the game with 13:29 on the clock.

Roanoke bagged two straight goals to take an 11-9 lead, but Mallory Brophy responded with back-to-back goals of her own to tie it up at 11 with 6:35 to play in the quarter. The Maroons ended the third netting three straight goals to bring the score to 14-11.

While the fourth was the lowest-scoring for both teams, Kenyon had the added task of overcoming the three-goal deficit built in the final minutes of the third. Although Blythe Karras got the Owls on the right track with 11:33 left to play, it would be Kenyon's only goal in the quarter. Roanoke would score twice more to set the 16-12 final.

Nola Garand had 14 saves on the day to keep the Owls in it down the stretch, as Lengel led the offense with four goals and one assist, all coming in the first half. Overall, the Owls were outshot 36-27 and trailed 20-18 in ground balls.

Kenyon's record drops to 1-2 on the season with the loss. The Owls will stay on the road and travel South for the "Spring Fling" trio of games, taking place in Panama City Beach, Florida. The first matchup will feature Eastern Connecticut State on March 11 at 5:00 pm (4:00 pm CDST).
