Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Kenyon draws close, but Denison distances late

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team hosted its penultimate home game for the 2024 season on Saturday afternoon, taking on Denison University for a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rivalry matchup.

Trailing by one goal going into halftime and two goals with six minutes to play in the fourth quarter, the Owls had chances to catch the Big Red down the stretch, but the visitors scored the final two goals to pull away late and lock up the 13-9 defeat.

Coming off of an NCAC Offensive Player of the Week honor for her impressive stats last week, Kate Lengel returned to form in front of a raucous home crowd at The Field at Benson Bowl, as the team hosted its alumni day. She scored Kenyon's first two goals to tie the game at two with 4:55 to play in the first quarter.

Denison responded and scored four out of the next five to take a 6-3 lead at 9:58 in the second, as Ella Rigoli got the lone goal for Kenyon. Spencer Kirsch got involved with her first tally of the day to cut into the Big Red lead, while Lengel fired two straight to tie the game at six and reach her first-half hat trick. Denison pulled ahead with 33 seconds left in the half to take a 7-6 lead after 30 minutes.

Coming out of halftime, the Big Red scored two goals to restore its lead to 9-6 just under three minutes into the third. Kirsch got her second of the day to come within two, as both defenses tightened up from then on. Each team scored two more goals in the rest of the third and well into the fourth to set the score at 11-9 with 5:46 to play, as Lengel and Bridgette Cassidy found twine for the Owls, marking Lengel's fifth goal of the day.

Nola Garand had a strong showing in net and made some big saves in the half to keep Kenyon in it, part of a 12-save afternoon from the junior keeper. Nearing the quarter's final third, the Owls seemed to have momentum.

However, turnovers in the midfield and failure to cause pressure on the defensive side kept the ball with Denison, who scored two goals in the final two minutes to ice the game 13-9 and remain undefeated in the NCAC.

The loss drops Kenyon's overall record to 5-7 and 1-3 in the conference. The Owls will play its final conference road game this week, traveling to Oberlin, Ohio to take on the Oberlin College Yeowomen on Wednesday, April 24 at 7:00 pm.
