Dakos celebrates Senior Day, NCAC title

GAMBIER, Ohio -- As the lone fourth-year player on Kenyon College women's tennis team, Eleni Dakos was in the spotlight Saturday during a Senior Day celebration. After she was recognized for her athletic accomplishments, she got on the court and guided the Owls to a convincing 9-0 home win over the DePauw University Tigers.

The win moved the No. 43-ranked Owls to 11-6 overall, but more importantly, it capped the team's North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) record at 6-0 and secured the regular-season conference crown for the second straight season.

Dakos started the memorable morning paired with Shadia Amado Aguad in the No. 1 doubles match. The Kenyon duo cruised to an 8-2 victory over Kassie Green and Ellen Gardner. Following that, Dakos slotted into the No. 3 singles match and quickly posted a clean 6-0, 6-0 win against Valerie Doherty.

The wins made Dakos 12-8 in singles matches this year and 14-8 in doubles matches. To this point in her four collegiate seasons, Dakos has a 42-31 career singles mark and a 60-28 doubles mark.

Back at the start of Saturday's match, following Dakos' doubles win, Kenyon's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams checked out with identical 8-3 triumphs to give Kenyon a 3-0 team lead. The Owls' No. 2 pairing was Eleni Lazaridou and Lalasa Nagireddy, while at No. 3 it was Ana Brand and Madeline Chappars.

Lazaridou remained in her No. 1 singles spot to defeat Gardner 6-1, 6-1. A few minutes later, Brand won at No. 4, scoring Kenyon's fifth team point and clinching the team victory. Brand got that win by a 6-0, 6-0 count against Katie King.

Finalizing things for the Owls were Amado Aguad with a win at No. 2, Nagireddy with a win at No. 5 and Chappars with a win at No. 6. All those were decided in straight sets, as well.

With the regular-season conference title in hand, the Owls will move on to NCAC Tournament play as the No. 1 seed in the seven-team field. The tournament will play out May 3-5 at The College of Wooster.

Before Kenyon advances to postseason play it has one match left on its regular-season schedule. That home match is slated for tomorrow at noon against No. 9-ranked Carnegie Mellon University.
