Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Owls topple Tigers to clinch tournament berth

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team was faced with a must-win situation on Saturday afternoon, as the team hosted DePauw University for what would become a battle for the fourth seed in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tournament.

Despite going down 5-3 after the first quarter, the Owls outscored the Tigers 16-2 in the final 45 minutes to cruise to a 19-7 victory and earn a spot in the conference tournament.

DePauw came out firing, looking to avenge its losses to Kenyon in both the regular and post-season last year. The Tigers scored four out of five goals in the game's first ten minutes to take a 4-1 lead. Kate Lengel and Ashley Quinn added to Alex Tiatia's early tally to bring the Owls within two after one.

From the opening whistle of the second quarter, Kenyon took full control of the game and never gave it up. Ali Hatfield and Mallory Brophy started things off and each netted their 21st goals of the season to tie the game at five with 10:58 in the quarter. Although DePauw responded less than a minute later to regain the lead, Kenyon scored six straight to end the half up 11-6, as Lily Mason and Spencer Kirsch led the way with two goals apiece.

In the third, Lengel received a huge ovation from the crowd, as she scored her 100th career goal to put Kenyon up 14-7 with 2:42 remaining in the quarter. Kenyon scored five more goals in the final 16 minutes to cement the 19-7 final.

As a team, the Owls outshot the Tigers 41-to-25 for the game and won the ground ball battle 23-to-18. Nola Garand was very solid on the defensive end, making ten saves while helping the team to 18-of-22 (81 percent) on the clear.

After the game, the team honored its 2024 Senior Class, which includes Mia Van Wie, Kate Lengel, Lauren Gilbert, Sam Lee, Casey O'Neill, Annabel Ives, Maren Helmacy, Maddie Garner, Ali Hatfield, and Eva Hitt

With the win, Kenyon moves to 7-7 on the season and 3-3 in the NCAC, which puts them in a three-way tie for third place in the standings with The College of Wooster and DePauw. Following conference tie-breaker rules, Kenyon will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming NCAC Tournament and will play at No. 2-seeded Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday.
