Comets use second-half goal to edge Owls

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College and Capital University women's soccer teams traded goals off corner kicks Tuesday at Mavec Field. In between those two tallies, the visiting Comets were able sneak in one more goal and escaped with a 2-1 non-conference victory over the host Owls.

Kenyon didn't waste much time in taking the lead. In the game's sixth minute, the Owls earned a corner kick after a long shot from Jenna Michel was punched over the crossbar by Capital keeper Sofia Walton. Jamie Murphy then set in the corner for Kenyon. The ball rattled around in the middle of the box before Emily Copeland turned on it and booted in her team-leading third goal of the season, just inside the left post.

The goal served as a wake-up call for the Comets offense, which took seven of the game's next eight shots and posted a 9-5 advantage in attempts throughout the first half.

Kenyon goalkeeper Ariel Kite managed to hold off Capital with a few saves, including back-to-back stops from point-blank range in the game's 19th minute. The Comets, however, broke through in the 36th minute. Capital's Myaci Sayre was able to control a long pass down the right side and she tapped a pass over to Ava Spirk. Spirk then ripped a shot from about 22 yards away and found the left corner of the Kenyon net.

Less than a minute later, Copeland nearly regained the lead for Kenyon, but her shot from the left side of the box rang off the crossbar and sent the teams into the break all square at 1-1.

In the second half, Capital continued to hold the edge in possession, as well as in shot count. In the 62nd minute, the Comets' 13th shot of the game gave them the lead for good. A corner from the right side was sent in by Taylor Marcum. As the ball descended into the box, Rachel Austin somehow made her way through a bunch of bodies, got a head on it, and put what would be the game-winner past Kite.

The Comets, who improved to 2-4 with the win, out-shot Kenyon 7-3 in the second half and 16-8 for the game.

The Owls had just one second-half shot from Claire Pruner before the Comets took the lead. After the Comets took the lead, the Owls had two more shots. One came from Copeland and that one sailed high. The other came from Pruner and it was saved by Lauren Hinshaw, who replaced Walton in net during second-half play.

On the other side of the field, Kite wound up making seven saves for Kenyon, which fell to 1-4 with the loss.
