GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College Owls toed the line against the Transylvania University Pioneers on the Field at Benson Bowl on Saturday afternoon for a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) field hockey matchup. The Owls took an early lead and held the offensive edge for three quarters, and the home team held up against late Pioneers pressure to preserve a 1-0 win.
Kenyon secured its sixth win of the season, improving to 6-1 overall and remaining undefeated in conference contests at 3-0. Transylvania fell to 3-3 with the loss, dropping to 1-2 in NCAC play.
Grace Lane landed the first and only blow in the game, giving the Owls a first-quarter lead with her team-leading sixth goal this season. After more than 13 minutes of scoreless action, the Owls had a fastbreak opportunity with a little over a minute remaining in the opening period.
After taking possession on their defensive end, Kenyon's Liz Cramer played a ball to Zady Hasse, who made a nice move to cut between a pair of Pioneers and find some open space. Casey Master tapped the ball to Abby Golub, who immediately passed to Maren Lawrence, who was streaking up the right side of the field with lots of green ahead of her. Lawrence launched the ball into the circle, and the long cross found the stick of Lane, who was cutting in front of the Transylvania cage. From the right side of the goal, Lane left her defender in the dust with a smooth crossover and found the right angle to put the ball in the back left corner of the cage to put the Owls on the board.
Lane and Lawrence led Kenyon's offensive efforts, launching 10 of the team's 14 shots. The Owls outshot the Pioneers 14-4, including an 8-0 mark in the second quarter and a 14-2 edge over the first three frames. Kenyon's offensive advantage included a 7-1 edge in shots on goal, but the Pioneers prevented the Owls from converting to keep the game close.
Transylvania's ability to hang around paid off in the fourth quarter as the visitors flipped the script and held all the momentum. The Pioneers pressured Kenyon for most of the final 15 minutes, outshooting the Owls 2-0 and earning a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners after a 4-0 edge in the third quarter.
However, Megan Lydon and the Owls defense was up to the task. The senior keeper saved the first shot of the final frame, and the Owls prevented the Pioneers from getting a shot after three of their set pieces. A late whistle gave Transylvania one final chance at an equalizer with just five seconds left, but Kenyon disrupted yet another penalty corner, and the final shot sailed wide as the Owls clinched the 1-0 win.
Up next, Kenyon closes out a four-game homestand with two games in Gambier over the coming week. The Owls welcome Ohio Wesleyan University at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24, and Denison University at noon on Saturday, September 28.
