Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Owls can’t break through against Big Red

GAMBIER, Ohio – Playing in the fourth and final game of a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) homestand that opened conference play, the Kenyon College field hockey team hosted the Denison Big Red at the Field at Benson Bowl on Saturday afternoon as part of the college's Homecoming festivities.

Offensive opportunities were hard to come by for the Owls on the day, as Grace Lane scored the team's lone goal in what ended up a 4-1 loss for the home team.

Lane's goal came at 10:15 in the second quarter, after Denison (4-5, 3-0 NCAC) got on the board about halfway through the first frame. Lane received a pass off of a penalty corner from Raigan Hutter, calmly collected the ball just inside the circle and sent a rocket of a shot to the bottom left corner to tie the game at one.

The goal is Lane's seventh of the season, which puts her first on the team and tied for second in the conference. Hutter picked up her fourth assist on the year, which gives her the conference lead.

However, this would be Kenyon's (6-2, 3-2) only tally of the game, as the team struggled to get shots and chances for the majority of the contest due to turnovers in the midfield. The Owls had six shots, two on goal, and only two penalty corners for the game.

On the defensive side of the field, Kenyon held tough, battling through 27 shots, 15 on goal, and ten penalty corners. Megan Lydon was strong in net and was very busy for the second consecutive game, making eleven stops including an excellent kick save on a penalty stroke late in the third quarter. Today's tussle with the Big Red marks the second double-digit save game in a row for Lydon, as the senior goalie made 13 against Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon.

Denison regained the lead in the second quarter 2-1 and applied more pressure in the third, scoring twice to expand the deficit to 4-1.

The Owls tried to spark some offense early in the fourth quarter, as Lane again had a great low shot, but a nice kick save by the Big Red keeper kept Kenyon out of the net and set the final score.

Kenyon's record drops to 6-2 on the season and 3-2 in the NCAC. The Owls will now embark on a five-game road trip with both conference and non-conference opponents. The first game of that trip will be on Saturday, October 5 against the DePauw University Tigers at noon.
