Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

DePauw deals Kenyon its first conference loss

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Kenyon College women's soccer team held an advantage in nearly every statistical category in Saturday's first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) road test against DePauw University.

However, on the scoreboard where it counts, the Tigers were able to sneak away with a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal in the 20th minute, dealing the Owls their first conference loss.

Kenyon (7-2-3, 1-1 NCAC) controlled possession early on, registering the game's first chances. Addison Szollosi and Brooke Heis had shots in the ninth minute, one blocked and the other just wide, while Fiona Douglas and Emily Copeland each narrowly missed high in the 15th minute.

DePauw broke through in the 20th minute for what ended up being the game-winning goal. Macy Happe fired the shot which Ariel Kite knocked away, but the rebound fell right to Ellie Mahan who was able to find twine and give her team the lead.

The goal-scoring sequence would be the Tigers' only shots for the entire game, as the Owls defense did an excellent job of preventing any more tallies for the home team.

Szollosi found the cage in the 28th minute and Jenna Michel added another in the 38th, but both were knocked away by DePauw keeper Aubree Empie.

In the second half, Kenyon held a 9-0 shot advantage and a 4-0 edge in corners, but failed to find the back of the net. The best chances of the second came in the 46th minute by Holly Byun and Copeland in the 63rd minute, both of which were turned away by Empie.

The Owls outshot the Tigers 17-2 for the game and amassed an 8-2 gap in corners. The squad also added a 4-2 lead in shots on goal, but after 90 minutes Kenyon could not get its equalizer, dropping to 1-1 in conference play.

Copeland led the team with five shots and one on goal, while Szollosi was not far behind with four shots and one on goal. Besides the goal in the first half, Kite had a relatively quiet game, making one save.

Up next, the Owls will head to Springfield, Ohio to take on Wittenberg University at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 17.
