Owls shuffle lineup in loss to Spartans

CLEVELAND -- Saturday afternoon at Veale Natatorium, the Kenyon College women's swimming and diving team put together an atypical lineup, resting many swimmers and moving others into events that weren't their specialties. The shuffle resulted in a 158-140 loss to the host Spartans of Case Western Reserve University.

Still, the Owls managed to win seven of the 14 swimming events contested.

Kenyon's first win came from sophomore Bengisu Caymaz. She won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:52.99. Two events later, Grace Jansen, a junior, won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.65.

Another junior, Ceyda Yazici, posted the Owls' next victory. She placed first in the 200-yard backstroke, clocking in at 2:03.42 and just missing her personal best of 2:03.32.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, senior Gabrielle Wei was not out of her element. She cruised to victory in 2:17.12. Teammate and junior, Jean Cook, took second in the same event, completing the race in 2:28.23.

In the next event, the 500-yard freestyle, senior Celia Ford, a butterfly specialist, took the top spot. She beat four Spartans to the wall, touching with a winning time of 5:13.38, a personal record in an event she rarely swims.

Wei and Ford then led a trio of Owls to the finish in the 100-yard individual medley Wei took the top spot with a time of 58.97 and Ford claimed third place with a 1:02.08. In between those two, sophomore Kate Bogan landed in the runner-up position, finishing in 59.05.

In the final race of the dual meet, the 200-yard freestyle relay, Kenyon's team of Gwen Eisenbeis, Molly Haag, Lisa Torrecillas-Jouault and Sydney Geboy closed things out with a winning time of 1:33.55.

Supporting Kenyon's seven event wins, Cook and Bogan were joined by five other individual-event runners-up. That group included Christine Kessens in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:57.09), Sofia Giordano in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.45), Geboy in the 50-yard freestyle (23.72), Torrecillas-Jouault in the 100-yard freestyle (51.48), and Eisenbeis in the 100-yard butterfly (58.08).

The Owls now turn their focus to the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship, a four-day meet that will begin Wednesday, February 12 in Granville, Ohio.
