Owls get by Garnet, finish Florida trip with big win

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Kenyon College women's tennis team played its last of seven duals down in Florida over the team's spring break slate on Wednesday evening, and the Owls closed out the stretch with a big win over Swarthmore College. Kenyon's streak of five straight 7-0 sweeps came to a close, but the No. 20-ranked Owls battled for a big 5-2 win over the No. 26-ranked Garnet, running Kenyon's winning streak to six straight.

Kenyon improved to 7-3 this season, while Swarthmore fell to 3-3. The victory marked Kenyon's first in four tries over an opponent ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national Division III standings.

Both teams had success in the matchup, and they mirrored one another with 6-0 doubles sweeps. Kenyon's duo of Shadia Amado Aguad and Clare Hudson posted their sweep in the No. 2 match, while Swarthmore secured their 6-0 win over Lalasa Nagireddy and Maggie Shope in the No. 3 bout. The split results set the stage for a winner-take-all matchup at the top of the doubles lineup, and the Owls' top team of Eleni Lazaridou and Hana Nouaime clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at No. 1.

The doubles decision loomed large as the contest was closer than the 5-2 final may make it seem. The Garnet got a big win in the top singles spot as Nathalie Williams swept Lazaridou 6-0, 6-4, and Swarthmore added another sweep when Ella Strickler sat down Shope 6-2, 6-0.

Had doubles flipped in the tightly-contested No. 1 match, the No. 6 singles spot could have decided the dual's overall outcome. Fortunately for Kenyon though, the Owls had removed all doubt and clinched at that point. However, that did not stop Nagireddy from completing a comeback to put the cherry on top of the team's win. The senior bounced back from a 7-5 set-one loss with a 6-2 win in the second stanza. Nagireddy and Lisa Messier went back and forth in set three and were knotted up at 5-5 before the players needed to play an abbreviated tiebreak to get their match in before the courts closed. Nagireddy dominated the final fight with a 5-1 win to close out the three-set battle, 5-7, 6-2, 6-5 (5-1).

Earlier in the evening, Kenyon compiled three sweeps over the Nos. 2, 3, and 4 spots in the lineup to lock up the victory. Amado Aguad outlasted her No. 2 opponent 7-5 in set one before clinching with a 6-2 set-two win, running her individual singles streak to a team-high eighth straight victory.

First-year teammates Hudson and Nouaime fired up big wins in their matches, each moving to 5-0 in their respective spots in the singles lineup. At No. 3, Hudson posted Kenyon's largest margin of victory, a 6-2, 6-2 sweep. Nouaime nabbed a hard-fought victory, coming up big with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4.

After playing seven times in eight days over spring break, the Owls have an extended break before their next dual on Sunday, March 23. Kenyon will welcome Otterbein University for the Owls' home opener, which is set to start at noon at the Jasper Tennis Center.
