Owls come out on top over two ranked opponents

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's tennis team had a huge day at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club, picking up a pair of wins over tough, ranked opponents. The No. 16-ranked Owls matched up against No. 21 Washington and Lee University (10-5) and No. 10 Washington University in St. Louis (5-5), and Kenyon kept its stellar season rolling with a pair of big wins to improve to 12-2 this season.

Kenyon started Saturday with a dominant showing against the W&L Generals, securing a 4-0 victory in the best-of-seven dual as the teams played to clinch. The win gave the Owls momentum heading into a showdown against WashU, Kenyon's second-highest-ranked opponent so far this season. The Owls had gritty performances up and down the singles and doubles lineups, and the squad's hard work paid off when Rishil Kondapaneni emphatically clinched the 4-3, comeback win, setting off a well-deserved Owls celebration.

The Owls won both of the day's doubles points, and the team's top duo got the job done in both duals. Paulo Pocasangre Kreling and Alejandro Gonzalez cruised to a 6-1 win against Washington and Lee before clinching the doubles point with a hard-fought 7-5 win against WashU. The pairing has been Kenyon's best and most consistent all season, and their 13 overall wins are far and away the most amongst Kenyon doubles duos this year.

Kenyon's other two doubles teams took turns adding wins throughout the day. Jay Kedar Dixit and Josh Finkle clinched the doubles point at No. 2 against the Generals to start the day, while the No. 3 team of Kondapaneni and Eric Zhang outlasted the Bears 7-5 later on.

Singles play saw the Owls get important contributions throughout the lineup. Against W&L, Zhang and Gonzalez put the team on the verge of clinching with wins at No. 4 and No. 2, respectively. Juozas Cioladis polished off the sweep in the fifth flight, battling for a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 straight-set sweep to secure the 4-0 final.

Kenyon had a harder time against WashU, and the Owls saw the Bears turn Kenyon's 1-0 lead into a 2-1 deficit after straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 6. Pocasangre Kreling helped the Owls get back on track with a much-needed win in the top matchup, fighting for a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) decision.

Still, WashU pulled within a point of winning with a win at No. 4. Facing two must-win matches, Cioladis corralled another crucial result when he won his No. 5 bout 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). That set the stage for a winner-take-all No. 3 matchup, and the bout needed all three sets to determine a winner. Fortunately for the Owls, their senior stalwart Kondapaneni was up to the task.

After winning a closely contested first set 7-5, Kondapaneni needed to bounce back following a 6-2 second-set loss. In the deciding third frame, the senior raced out to his own 6-2 result, locking up the electric comeback victory.

The Owls have a quick turnaround with an 8 a.m. matchup tomorrow morning, and Kenyon will look to keep momentum on its side heading into a second straight day at Case Western Reserve University's home facility. The Owls have another strong opponent on deck, a Hobart College team that was ranked No. 37 before falling out of this week's updated rankings.
