Owls suffer loss to another ranked opponent

MAYFIELD, Ohio -- Playing a neutral-site match at Mayfield Village Racquet Club on Saturday, the No. 22-ranked Kenyon College women's tennis team did not get off to a good start, dropping all three doubles matches en route to a 5-2 loss to the No. 15-ranked Polar Bears of Bowdoin College.

The Polar Bears got quick 6-2 and 6-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively, to seal the doubles team points. At No. 1 doubles, the Bowdoin pairing of Caroline Stuhlfaut and Jamilah Karah defeated Kenyon's duo of Eleni Lazaridou and Hana Nouaime, 6-3.

Bowdoin continued to tack on the team points when Karah won the No. 3 singles match over Shadia Amado Aguad, 6-2, 6-1, and Julia Ross defeated Clare Hudson, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 battle.

Now trailing 3-0, the Owls mounted a bit of a comeback. Lazaridou got it started by posting Kenyon's first team point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Stuhlfaut. Ana Brand then outlasted Suzanne Pogorelec, 7-5, 7-5, to make the overall team score 3-2 in favor of the Polar Bears.

From that point, Bowdoin finished things off by sweeping the final two singles matches. Bella Hartung defeated Nouaime 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, and then Zoe Sun held off Lalasa Nagireddy, 6-2, 7-5.

The outcome bumped Bowdoin's overall record to 6-3, while the loss dropped Kenyon to 8-5. All five of Kenyon's losses have come against teams nationally ranked at No. 16 or better.

The Owls will now turn their attention to North Coast Athletic Conference action, beginning with an April 9 match at rival Denison University.
