Kenyon drops conference opener to DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind. – After its final non-conference contest of the 2025 season was cancelled, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team had a week off before picking up action Saturday afternoon to open the North Coast Athletic Conference schedule against DePauw University on the road.

The Owls battled close with the Tigers throughout the contest fueled by four goals from Lily Mason, but the squad could not overcome the four goal deficit faced in the fourth quarter, eventually falling 13-10.

Kenyon entered the contest riding a 12 game win streak against the Tigers, but it was DePauw who struck first to open the scoring at 7:31 in the first quarter. Blythe Karras connected on her team leading 32nd point of the season on a free-position shot to even the score, but the home team countered again less than 30 seconds later. To close the first, Mason scored her first goal of the day, but DePauw responded to take a narrow 3-2 lead after 15 minutes.

Mason scored twice more in the second quarter to mark the only scoring for the Owls, while the Tigers added three more on the other end to take a 6-4 lead to halftime.

The third quarter marked the highest-scoring period of the game, as the squads buried a combined nine goals. DePauw dropped three straight goals to start the third and take its largest lead of the game, building a 9-4 advantage at 11:24 in the frame.

The Owls responded with a 4-2 run of their own in the next 10:37 of the quarter, as Susannah Zimmerman tallied two goals in the stretch. Charlotte Skelly and Ashley Auerbach each found the back of the net for their first goals of the day, resulting in an 11-8 Tiger lead after 45 minutes.

Kenyon's comeback attempt got off to a rocky start in the fourth, as DePauw struck first to expand the lead to 12-8 with 14:13 to play. Mason responded less than a minute later to restore the three-goal game, but the Owls could not get anything going in the fourth, being outshot 10-5 and losing the ground ball battle 7-4. Despite a score from Skelly with three minutes to play, DePauw hit the dagger 45 seconds later to ice the game 13-10.

Mason led Kenyon scorers with four goals, bumping her season total to a team-leading 22. Elena Zuvekas set new career highs for single game assists (3) and points (3). Zimmerman finished with two goals and an assist, while Skelly added two.

Auerbach, Emma Sage and Cecily Torres each tallied two caused turnovers on the defensive end, while Auerbach turned in a team-high three ground balls. Nola Garand made 12 saves on 22 shots on goal for a .480 save percentage.

Kenyon's record falls to 4-6 on the season and 0-1 in the conference. Up next, the Owls return to Gambier for a conference matchup against Oberlin College at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, April 8.
