Owls’ NCAA Tournament run ends in third round

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's tennis team took on Case Western Reserve University in the third round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship on Sunday, the second time the Owls have faced the Spartans this season. Kenyon looked to keep its tournament run alive with a second straight win, but the Owls could not overcome the hosting Spartans, falling 4-0.

Kenyon's second contest against CWRU did not go as well as the first when the Owls pushed the highly-ranked Spartans to the brink in a 4-3 loss on the team's spring break trip down in Florida. Still, the Owls fought hard, but the hosting, No. 5-ranked Spartans stood strong. Kenyon, ranked No. 13 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) standings, finishes their season with a 19-6 overall record. CWRU improves to 27-5 and advances to the NCAA Quarterfinals in Claremont, California on May 19.

CWRU clinched the doubles point with wins in the top two flights. Josh Finkle and Eric Zhang fell first, a 6-3 final at No. 2 before Kenyon's No. 1 pairing of Paulo Pocasangre Kreling and Alejandro Gonzalez fell 6-2. Rishil Kondapaneni and Gianluca Bocanegra were leading 4-3 in their No. 3 bout, but the duo did not have a chance to close it out as the teams played to clinch in both doubles and the match.

In singles, the results came in on either end of the lineup. The first match to finish was at No. 1, where Pocasangre Kreling, the ITA's No. 16-ranked Division III singles player, fell 6-2, 6-1 to Ajay Mahenthiran, the No. 14-ranked singles competitor. Rakkan Audeh, who scored yesterday's clinching point, fell 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6, before Zhang, a fellow senior, went down at No. 5. Zhang hung tough and forced a first-set tiebreaker, but ultimately fell 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. Gonzalez got the team's lone win, whipping up a 6-1 first-set victory at No. 2.

Though the season is in the books for the Owls in a team setting, Kenyon will keep rooting for Pocasangre Kreling when the junior competes in the singles bracket at the 2025 NCAA Championship.
