Kenyon can’t crack Denison in NCAC final

GRANVILLE, Ohio – After an impressive regular season amassing a 17-4 record including five wins over top-30 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranked opponents, the Kenyon College men's tennis team fell to No. 2 Denison on Sunday afternoon in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament final 4-1.

The Owls hung tough with the nation's second best team and the No. 1 conference seed on the road, but the squad could not pick up any points in the early doubles matches. The No. 1 flight of Paulo Pocasangre Kreling and Alejandro Gonzalez fell 6-2, while the same result followed for the No. 3 duo of Gianluca Bocanegra and Rishil Kondapaneni. The No. 2 pair of Josh Finkle and Eric Zhang also fell short, dropping a 6-1 result and ceding the early point to the Big Red.

Kenyon's lone win of the day came from Gonzalez, who earned a victory in the No. 2 flight. He took the first set 6-2 before matching it in the second to tie the overall score at one.

Juozas Cioladis' match in the No. 4 flight was another close one for the Owls. He battled to a 6-4 loss in the first set before falling 6-1 in the second.

The No. 1 and No. 5 flights finished with the same score and closed the match 4-1 for Denison, playing to a clinch. Pocasangre Kreling dropped his contest in the No. 1 flight, while Eric Zhang represented the Owls in the No. 5.

Rishil Kondapaneni's match in the No. 3 flight did not finish, but was close throughout, falling 7-6 in the first flight and ending the second set tied at six. Rakkan Audeh's match in the No. 6 flight ended with him trailing 5-3.

The Owls will have to wait and see if the team or any individuals earn an at-large spot in the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament. Selections will be announced on Monday, May 5 at 12:30 pm.
