Commandeur connects to push Owls past Panthers

HANOVER, Ind. – Finishing up a two-game road stint, the Kenyon College men's soccer team took on Hanover College on Sunday afternoon looking for three wins in a row.

One goal was all the Owls needed to top the Panthers for the match, as first-year defender Jack Commandeur found the back of the net in the 39th minute for the game winner.

Joey Nigro lined up to take the corner which led to the score after a first half in which Kenyon had just one other shot on goal despite four corners. Nigro lofted a ball to the far side of the goal to Grant Blake, who headed the ball near a cluster of Owls attackers led by Commandeur who charged forward and nodded it home. The goal was the first of Commandeur's young career, while Blake's assist was also his first.

While the score didn't change in the second half, the final 45 was controlled by Kenyon. The Owls outshot the Panthers 6-1 after the break with four on target. The Kenyon defense held Hanover to just four shots all game, none of which found the cage, which made starting keeper Dominic Pratt's day relatively easy.

The Owls got excellent minutes out of its underclassmen for the game resulting in dangerous chances to expand the lead. Besides the goal, which involved first-years in all facets, two sophomores and two first-years combined for the best opportunities of the second half.

Sophomore Ethan Castaneda tested the Hanover goalie in the 52nd minute, while classmate Lucas de Alarcon hit the cage less than 10 minutes later. First-years Hyugo Todo and Danny Kankam made up the other two shots on goal.

As a team, Kenyon held the advantage in corner kicks 10-3 and shots 8-4, with a 5-0 edge in shots on goal. Seven different Owls combined for shots on goal, as de Alarcon led the way with two.

Up next, Kenyon will head back to Gambier for a stretch of two home games, the first of which kicking off on Saturday, September 20 at 1:00 p.m. against Case Western Reserve University.
