Owls score big win over Spartans on Senior Day

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Before Friday's dual meet with Case Western Reserve University, the Kenyon College women's swimming and diving team celebrated Senior Day. Once in the pool, the Owls, led by senior Gwen Eisenbeis, racked up a convincing 218-82 victory over the Spartans.

In all, 16 events were contested at Steen Aquatic Center and the Owls came away with 15 wins. Eisenbeis had a hand in four of those wins. On her own, she dialed up top times in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. She won the 50 in a 'B' cut and season-best mark of 23.50 and then took the 100 with another 'B' cut and personal-record time of 51.29.

In relay events, Eisenbeis swam a leg on two winning teams. In the meet's first event, the 200-yard medley relay, Eisenbeis joined Kelsey Van Eldik, Maggie Grespin, and Kate Bogan to generate a winning time of 1:41.42, which tied Kenyon's top mark of the season. At the end of the meet, Eisenbeis swam with fellow senior Lisa Torrecillas-Jouault, Bogan, and Julia Mascarenhas to win the 200-yard free in 1:33.82.

Torrecillas-Jouault and Bogan also racked up individual-event wins, too. Torrecillas-Jouault won the 200-yard freestyle in a personal-record time of 1:51.81 and, later, was the fastest in the 200-yard backstroke, clocking in at 2:04.79. In between those two events, Bogan nailed down first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.61.

Molly Haag, another senior, posted a winning time of 4:50.82 to claim first place in the 500-yard freestyle race. Her time cleared the NCAA 'B' cut and also was a season best.

While the seniors were impressive, Kenyon's junior class also put forth an excellent showing with Sofia Giordano, Amelia Stevenson, and Ashlyn Widmer each adding a win to the Owls' output. Giordano claimed first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:25.06), Stevenson won the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.08), and Widmer was triumphant in the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.71).

Kenyon's other two swimming event wins came from sophomore Nora Lee Brown and first-year Kate Dunagan. Brown took the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:23.41, and, early in the meet, Dunagan touched first in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in at 56.59.

In the diving well, Kenyon sophomore Nadia Milovich topped the one-meter field with a score of 217.28 and junior Lucy Cassell-Kelley took the three-meter title, tallying a score of 232.75.

Weather permitting, the Owls will be back in action tomorrow, taking on NCAA Division I opponents Xavier University and Miami (OH) University in Oxford, Ohio.
