Late goal lifts Kenyon past John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — The No.14-ranked Kenyon College men's soccer team surrendered a two-goal halftime lead before Ethan Castaneda scored the decisive goal, lifting the Owls to a 3-2 win over John Carroll University Wednesday night at Don Shula Stadium at Wasmer Field.

The win improved Kenyon to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play, while John Carroll fell to 5-6-2 overall and 2-2 in conference action.

Kenyon struck first in the ninth minute when Lucas de Alarcon finished a pass from Andrew Adams at 8:50 to give the Owls an early advantage. The goal was de Alarcon's sixth of the season.

The Owls doubled their lead with an Andrew Adams goal at 33:51, sending Kenyon into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.

John Carroll responded after the break, cutting the deficit in half when Luka Pranjeta scored at 56:57 off an assist from Rafa De La Barrera. The Blue Streaks continued their comeback in the 69th minute, as Noah Schmidt found the net at 68:56, again with De La Barrera providing the assist, to even the match at 2-2.

With the game in the closing minutes, Kenyon found the breakthrough it needed. At 83:23, Luca Bilotto assisted Ethan Castaneda, who scored to restore the Owls' lead and ultimately secure the victory.

Kenyon finished with a 13-5 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. The Owls also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Matthew Kayser played all 90 minutes in goal for Kenyon, making one save while allowing two goals. John Carroll goalkeeper Bryce Sampson recorded three saves.

The Owls will look to carry their momentum into their next contest, which will be a non-conference tilt against the University of Mount Union on Saturday, October 17.
