Karnitz crowned NCAC Athlete of the Week

CLEVELAND -- Starting the new season on a positive note, Kenyon College junior Leo Karnitz registered some impressive swims in Saturday's season opener. Based on those swims, the North Coast Athletic Conference announced Tuesday that Karnitz was the pick for Athlete of the Week honors.

Saturday's meet for Karnitz and the rest of the Owls team was a dual against NCAA Division II University of Indianapolis. During the meet, Karnitz posted Kenyon's lone individual-event win, taking the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 54.98. Following that race, he tacked on a second-place swim in the 200-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 2:02.92.

In relay competition, Karnitz swam a leg on Kenyon's 200-yard medley relay 'B' team, which placed second in 1:30.53 and a leg on the 200-yard freestyle 'C' team which took fourth place in 1:24.23.

The conference's weekly award was a first for Karnitz, who set Kenyon's 100-yard breaststroke record at 54.31 back in February.
