Kenyon student-athletes promote fitness at Wiggin Street

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Energy was off the charts at Wiggin Street Elementary on Thursday, October 15, as Kenyon College student-athletes teamed up with Ohio State football legend Devier Posey for the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge.

The free initiative, spearheaded by Ohio Lt. Governor Jim Tressel, matches college athletes with local kids to champion active, healthy lifestyles. Armed with 30-day fitness journals tracking cardio, strength, flexibility, nutrition, and sleep, the elementary students got a hands-on masterclass in staying fit with Kenyon's Owls leading the charge.

The afternoon rolled through high-energy workouts and motivational talks centered on a simple message: focus on personal growth, not perfection. But the real fireworks came during the grand finale.

Packed wall-to-wall, the gym erupted into pure chaos during a high-stakes relay race pitting Kenyon's athletes against the Wiggin Street kids. The catch? The Owls had to bear-crawl their way to the finish line while the elementary squad sprinted flat out. Kenyon surged to an early lead, but the deafening roar of 200 cheering third, fourth, and fifth-graders turned the tide. Rattle-tested by the sheer volume of the home crowd, the Owls faltered late, allowing Wiggin Street to pull off a sensational comeback victory in a photo finish.

Beyond the excitement of the relay, the afternoon provided a meaningful foundation for the weeks ahead. By connecting local elementary students with college athletes, the event offered more than just workout advice giving the kids tangible role models for building healthy, daily habits. As they begin their 30-day fitness challenge, the Wiggin Street students leave with both practical tools and a clear message on the value of consistent, personal effort.
