Kenyon College Athletics

Athletics Accountability Statement

Participating in varsity athletics at Kenyon is a privilege, even more so this semester as the College has granted us the opportunity to train and, in some cases, travel and compete. With privilege comes responsibility, which means that we are entrusting our teams and student-athletes to make informed decisions that place the health and safety of the entire community as a priority. We expect our student-athletes, coaches, and staff to make daily decisions that prioritize what is right for the Kenyon community--which is clearly articulated in the Kenyon Commitment and addendum to the student code of conduct, as well as in our Department of Athletics COVID-19 principles of masking, physical distancing and working groups of 10 or fewer.

With privilege and responsibility, then, comes accountability. While all of us will have our struggles and find protocols and rules difficult at times, by accepting the privilege and the responsibility, we also accept that we will have to own our decisions, particularly those that put the Kenyon community--our teams, our classmates, our faculty and staff--at risk.

Should student-athletes choose to make decisions that put our community at risk, those student-athletes will face consequences to be determined on a case-by-case basis. Minor infractions by individuals should and will be handled by the campus judicial process, and individual sport coaches may deal with these situations as well. Incidents that involve a critical mass of student-athletes and/or teams, however, will require a department accountability process that may result in individuals or teams being withheld from practice or competition, whether or not they are placed in quarantine or isolation by the College or local health officials.
