Prior to arrival in Gambier, VanDoorn spent two years as the graduate assistant for the men's cross country and track a field teams at Elmhurst College, where he was in charge of overseeing the training and development of the Bluejays throwing program. During that two-year stint, VanDoorn coached three All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) athletes and one all-region javelin thrower.

Before to his work at Elmhurst, VanDoorn sharpened his coaching skills at Rockford University, where he was a volunteer track and field assistant coach for one season, and at Howards Grove High School in Howards Grove, Wisconsin, where he worked as intern assistant coach for the boys and girls track and field teams. At Rockford, VanDoorn’s throwers established program records in the shot put, discus, hammer throw and weight throw.

VanDoorn studied and competed at Lakeland College in Plymouth, Wisconsin. He graduated in 2015 with a degree in exercise science. In May of 2018, he earned a master’s degree in general management while at Elmhurst.
