Box Score
GAMBIER, Ohio (October 22, 2011) Kenyon College's slumbering offense awoke in the second half of Saturday's key North Coast Athletic Conference women's soccer contest versus Wittenberg University. The Ladies scored both of their goals after halftime and toppled the Tigers, 2-0, for a crucial win.
Kenyon came out of the gate strong with a 10-4 advantage in first-half shots, but all ten were wide of the mark. The Ladies (10-5-1, 3-3-1 NCAC) dialed the intensity up a notch in the second period and finally were able to cash in on their scoring opportunities.
Actually, it may have been a missed shot that really got Kenyon rolling. A series of nifty passes left freshman
Becca Romaine with a one-on-one against the keeper and she ripped a shot from the right side that sailed six inches too high and caromed off the crossbar. However, the great look energized the Ladies' sideline.
Not long after that exchange, Kenyon was back on the attack. In the 65th minute, the Ladies found themselves with an advantage in the box when the Wittenberg defense succeeded in deflecting a cross. Sophomore
Madi Kim was in the right place at the right time to collect the carom and deposit it in the lower left corner of the goal for a 1-0 Kenyon lead.
That score was the Ladies' first since the second half of their October 9th game at Oberlin College and really loosened the team up. Twenty-five minutes later, Kenyon came back with another great series of crosses, which concluded with Romaine's touch to junior
Courtney Hague for a big insurance goal.
Overall, the Ladies finished with a whopping 26-6 advantage in the shot department. The Tigers (8-7-1, 3-3-0 NCAC) did manage to test sophomore goalie
Lauren Wolfe on three occasions, but she was up to the challenge each time. The shutout was Wolfe's sixth of the season and helped Kenyon secure its winningest season since the 2006 team won 14 games.
The victory also lifted Kenyon into fourth place in the NCAC standings with one conference game to go Wednesday night at Hiram College. With one week remaining in the regular season, only Allegheny College has locked up a spot in the NCAC tournament. Six teams are in the mix for the other three berths and the Ladies must top the Terriers, against whom they own a 16-0-0 all-time record, to bolster their postseason hopes.
