Ladies top Terriers, await word on NCAC tourney

HIRAM, Ohio (October 25, 2011) Senior Meg Murphy gave the Kenyon College women's soccer team the boost it needed Tuesday night at Hiram College. She scored the first and third goals during the Ladies' 3-0 victory over the Terriers in a game rife with North Coast Athletic Conference tournament implications.

For Kenyon (11-5-1, 4-3-1 NCAC), the contest at Hiram marked its final conference game of the season and, therefore, last opportunity to improve its position in the standings. The win set the Ladies' point total at 13, which gave them sole possession of third-place at the conclusion of Tuesday's action.

While that put Kenyon in great shape, Denison University and the College of Wooster still have the potential to claim one of the top four spots by the end of the week. To secure a tournament berth, the Ladies either need the Terriers to take down the Big Red on Saturday, or the Fighting Scots, who host Oberlin College Wednesday night and travel to Wittenberg University Saturday, to lose or draw at least one of their final two games.

With its postseason hopes in the balance, Kenyon wasted no time seizing control against Hiram (3-12-2, 0-6-1 NCAC). Murphy got the Ladies on the scoreboard in the sixth minute when her corner kick deflected off the Hiram goalkeeper and bounced over the goal line.

Kenyon then went on to cap its scoring before halftime. The next goal came at the 16:41 mark with senior Virginia Rushton on the dealing end. She set up classmate Caddie Durrett's eighth goal of the season to extend the Ladies' lead.

Murphy then struck the final blow four minutes later with her second goal of the game. Freshman Becca Romaine was credited with her fifth assist of the year on the score.

The Ladies did their best to pad their cushion in the second half with 12 shots, but were stonewalled by nine saves.

Kenyon held hefty advantages over the Terriers in shots, 22-6, and corner kicks, 13-2. That meant sophomore goalie Lauren Wolfe only needed to make three saves for her seventh shutout of the season.

The Ladies are now a perfect 17-0-0 all-time against Hiram.
