GAMBIER, Ohio (October 29, 2011) The Kenyon College women's soccer team wrapped up its regular season Saturday with a 3-0 non-conference loss to the Berry College Vikings. Fortunately for the Ladies, the loss had no impact on them gaining a spot in the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament for the first time since the 2007 season.
All Kenyon could do Saturday was play out its game with Berry and await word on other scores from around the conference. As it turned out, Denison defeated Hiram, 3-0, and Wooster defeated Wittenberg, 1-0. That pushed Wooster into the No. 3 seed for the NCAC's four-team postseason tournament and left DePauw, Denison, and Kenyon with the same 4-3-1 fourth-place conference record.
After digging through a couple of steps in the NCAC's tie-breaking system, goal-differential between the three tied teams became the difference-maker. Based on that, Kenyon earned the fourth and final tournament spot because of its plus-one differential against DePauw and Denison in games contested during the regular season. Denison broke even against Kenyon and DePauw, while DePauw turned in a minus-one differential in those same games.
The whole thing really boils down to the fact that No. 4-seeded Kenyon will play at No. 1-seeded Ohio Wesleyan University in a 7 p.m. Tuesday semifinal game, while No. 3-seeded Wooster will play at No. 2-seeded Allegheny in the other semifinal match, which will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The Ladies' extension to their season should definitely help them quickly forget about Saturday's result against Berry. The Vikings outshot the Ladies 14-6 and scored all three of their goals within the game's first 22 minutes. Kristen Brooks, Molly Johnson, and Leah Hathaway were responsible for the Berry goals.
The win improved the Vikings' record to 10-3-1, while Kenyon will head into postseason play with an overall record of 11-6-1, its best mark since the 2006 campaign.
