Jemison, Lords outlast Wabash in overtime

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – Senior J.J. Jemison's overtime goal Saturday at Wabash College gave the Kenyon College men's soccer team a hard-fought 1-0 victory and kept the Lords in the foreground of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament picture. With two games remaining the regular season, Kenyon's 4-1-2 conference mark is tied for the third-best in the conference.

Depending on the outcomes of two late contests Saturday, as many as six teams – including the Lords – could be separated by four points or less in the NCAC standings. Only the top four will advance to the upcoming conference tournament, meaning a wild final week of the regular-season slate is on the horizon.

Kenyon (8-5-2 overall) kept itself in the thick of the chase after posting its ninth shutout of the season. In seven NCAC contests to date, the Lords have allowed only two goals. The defense as a whole was particularly tough on the Little Giants, who attempted eight shots in the contest. Senior goalie James Smith stopped the two that were on target to keep Wabash (3-13-0, 1-6-0 NCAC) off the scoreboard.

The problem for the Lords was that the Little Giants' defense was just as tough. While Kenyon piled up 20 shot attempts in regulation, only six were on-goal and Wabash keeper Matt Paul smothered them all.

The Lords continued to test Paul early in overtime with three quick shots. He saved the third but the fourth finally got the best of him. Sophomore Nate Petrou assisted Jemison on the game-winning score late in the 93rd minute. It was Jemison's second goal of the week and his team-leading sixth of the season.

A stern test awaits Kenyon in its home finale Wednesday afternoon. Defending national champion Ohio Wesleyan University (11-2-3, 5-1-1 NCAC), which is tied for first place in the conference two points ahead of the Lords, visits McBride Field at 3:30 p.m. for a game that will factor heavily into the postseason race.
