NEW CONCORD, Ohio – With a 71-62 decision Saturday at Muskingum University, the Kenyon College women's basketball team recorded the program's landmark 400th victory. In addition to the team milestone, junior
Maureen Hirt pumped in 23 points and became the second Lady this season to pass the 1,000-point plateau.
Kenyon notched its fourth-straight victory to join the 400-win club. Now owners of a 6-1 record, the Ladies are off to their best seven-game start since the 2005-06 squad opened the season with ten-straight wins.
As for Hirt, she entered the contest 21 points shy of becoming the tenth player in team history to score 1,000 points. Her final shot of the game, a three-pointer with 1:19 remaining, put her in the exclusive club just five games after senior
Kayla Ernst also became a member.
The shot that gave Hirt 1,002 career points was critical in the outcome of the contest, too. Before she sank the three-ball, Kenyon held a slim, 61-60 lead over the host Muskies (3-3), who whittled their deficit down from 12 with a 15-4 run over the previous six minutes. Hirt's three-pointer caused Muskingum's momentum to do an about-face, though, and helped the Ladies outscore the Muskies, 10-2, over the final 79 seconds.
Hirt concluded the game 5-of-7 from long distance as part of another big three-point shooting night for Kenyon as a team. Junior
Maggie Boelter went 4-of-8 behind the arc in her 12-point performance. Sophomore
Sarah Hobbs tripled twice and senior
Katie Adlam connected on her only three-point try. The Ladies went 12-of-22 (54.5 percent) combined and posted a 52.7 three-point percentage (39-74) in their three games this week.
Adlam produced her second double-double of the season with 11 points and ten rebounds. Boelter just missed one of her own with nine boards on top of her dozen points. Senior
Kayla Ernst used a 7-of-7 showing at the free-throw line to pile up 19 points.
Kenyon will look to keep rolling when its North Coast Athletic Conference schedule opens Wednesday night in Gambier against Wittenberg University at 6 p.m.
