Accuracy escapes Ladies in tournament loss

GREENCASTLE, Ind. (February 24, 2012) The Denison University Big Red women's basketball team proved once again Friday that it has the Kenyon College Ladies' number. In a North Coast Athletic Conference tournament semifinal contest at DePauw University, Denison capitalized on a poor shooting night for Kenyon and cruised to a 64-49 victory, it's eleventh straight over the Ladies.

It certainly was not the way Kenyon wanted the season to come to an end. The Ladies (19-8) all together produced an uncharacteristic performance. Heading into the tournament game, the Kenyon women led all NCAC teams in field goal percentage (44.1 percent) and free throw percentage (74.1 percent). They also ranked second in the conference in scoring (67.3 ppg). With some credit due to the Denison defense, the Ladies managed to shoot just 34.8 percent (16-of-46) from the floor and 69.6 percent (16-of-23) from the charity stripe Friday night. Their final total of 49 points was just two points more than their season low.

Kenyon senior Morgan Korinek did what she could to shoulder the load. She finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. The loss, however, signaled the end of a terrific career for Korinek, who ranks among Kenyon's all-time greats in points (1,333, 5th), rebounds (790, 2nd), steals (236, 1st), and field goal percentage (.530, 2nd).

The bulk of Kenyon's shooting woes came from beyond the three-point line, where they fired at just 11.1 percent (1-of-9). On the other hand, the Big Red connected on 42.9 percent (9-of-21) of their three-point attempts. Denison junior Nicole Coggins, who had just 21 three-pointers during the entire regular season, surprised Kenyon by going 5-of-10 from long range.

Coggins finished with a game-high 21 points. Serafina Nuzzo added 16 points and Lydia Harlan chipped in with a dozen for the Big Red (20-7), who advance to Saturday's championship game.

Kenyon's leading scorer was junior Kayla Ernst, who pumped in 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting. She also snared six rebounds. Together, Ernst and Korinek accounted for nearly 60 percent of the Ladies' scoring and rebounding.

Korinek was a part of a senior class that also included Laura Harris and Andrea Pohly. Over the last four seasons, that trio had a hand in an overall 64-43 record and four straight trips to the NCAC semifinal round.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Ernst was one of six players named to the NCAC's All-Tournament team. She had a combined 34 points and ten rebounds in the Ladies' two postseason games.
