GAMBIER, Ohio (October 8, 2011) After suffering five one-goal losses this season, the Kenyon College men's soccer team continued its recent reversal of fortunes Saturday on sun-drenched Mavec Field. The Lords won their second-straight game by a 1-0 margin after the defense and junior
J.J. Jemison turned back North Coast Athletic Conference foe Oberlin College.
With a stingy defense limiting the Yeomen's scoring chances, Kenyon (5-6-1, 2-2-0 NCAC) spent the first 25 minutes racking up a distinct shot advantage without anything to show for it. That changed when Jemison charged ahead of the pack, slipped a defender, and fired a shot from the left side into the right corner of the net at the 25:41 mark.
Overall, the Lords had a stranglehold on the first half by outshooting the Yeomen, 17-0, but settled for the slim, 1-0 halftime lead. Kenyon came close to extending its cushion in the final minute of the frame with a series of tremendous scoring opportunities, but the packed in Oberlin defense kept the Lords from padding their lead.
Play evened out in the second half with Kenyon outshooting the Yeomen (4-9-0, 1-3-0 NCAC) by a more modest, 7-4 margin. The Lords did manage a pair of serious threats, but one shot clanged off the far post and Oberlin goalie Brandt Rentel made a solid save on the other.
Still, Kenyon did not have to worry about seeing the insurance-goal scenarios thwarted with its defense in charge. The Yeomen did not put a shot on goal in the period and watched the Lords deny all of their final charges in the game's waning minutes.
Kenyon returns to NCAC action Wednesday night at Hiram College and will attempt to run their record back to the .500 mark.
