GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's soccer team netted a trio of second-half goals Sunday, held off a late charge from the visiting Mount Union Purple Raiders, and posted a 3-2 non-conference at Mavec Field. The victory evened out the Ladies' record at 1-1.
After a scoreless first half, Kenyon senior
Courtney Hague, who hit a post with a shot earlier in the game, registered the Ladies' first goal of the season. Her left-footed drive hit the back of the Purple Raiders' net 6:18 into the second half.
Eight minutes later, sophomore
Becca Romaine Kenyon's leading goal-scorer from a season ago booted in her first goal of the 2012 season. Her shot clipped a bit of the post before getting behind Mount Union goalkeeper Maria Favorite.
With a two-goal cushion late it the game, Kenyon did not rest. Freshman
Alice Bell and sophomore
Aisha Simon teamed up for one more Ladies' tally. After working the right wing, Simon got to the end line and fired in a pass along the line. Her pass was met by Bell, who leaped in front of the goal and steered the ball into the net with her right foot.
At the time, Bell's goal in the 81st minute seemed unneeded, but it did turn out to be the game-winner. Mt. Union's Shannon Evans caught the Ladies' defense off guard not once, but twice. Evans put together a couple of breakaway goals within a 30-second span. Her second of the two goals occurred with just 45 seconds left in the game.
Although the scoreboard showed a one-goal game, Kenyon dominated just about every aspect. The Ladies held huge advantages in both shots (29-5) and corner kicks (11-1).
