SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – One of this season's best shooters in NCAA Division III women's basketball, Kenyon College junior
Maureen Hirt made 6-of-9 three-point attempts Wednesday night, scored a total of 31 points, and powered the Ladies to a 64-52 conference win over the host Wittenberg University Tigers.
The victory completed the regular-season sweep of the Tigers for the Ladies, who posted a 64-58 win in Gambier back in early December. The victory was also the Ladies' fifth in their last six games and improved their record to 13-4 overall and 7-1 within North Coast Athletic Conference competition.
Hirt entered the game against Wittenberg ranked sixth in the nation in three-pointers made per game (3.19). She also ranked 27th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage (.408). When she was through whipping the Tigers, those numbers improved to 3.35 and .425, respectively. Hirt has now scored 30 points or more in a game three times this season and currently averages 17.9 points per game, the third-best mark in the conference.
One of the players Hirt trails in the scoring department is senior teammate
Kayla Ernst, who complemented Hirt's outside game Wednesday night with her third double-double of the season. Ernst, who is averaging 19.2 points per game, scored 16 against the Tigers (7-8, 3-3 NCAC) and yanked down a career-best 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard
Maggie Boelter added seven points, five assists, and three steals for the Ladies.
The turning point of the game occurred late in the first half. With both teams struggling to produce, Ernst sparked a Kenyon run by converting a layup with 3:40 on the clock. That bucket gave Kenyon a 16-13 advantage. Freshman
Meredith Williams canned another two for Kenyon and sophomore
Lauren Kriete followed up with a three-ball. The run carried Kenyon from a 14-13 lead to a 25-18 lead at the half.
In the second frame, Hirt and Ernst put the game away. Hirt buried four of her six three-pointers and scored 19 of her 31 points during those last 20 minutes. After scoring just four in the first half, Ernst piled on a dozen in the second and Kenyon went on to build a lead as large as 15 points.
