WOOSTER, Ohio – In the Saturday soccer nightcap at John P. Papp Stadium, Kenyon College and The College of Wooster waited until the second half to mark up the scoreboard, but not for lack of scoring attempts. After pecking away at the Fighting Scot defense for more than 55 minutes, Nate Petrou and Rei Mitsuyama each scored goals while Jeremiah Barnes aided in each, leading to a 2-0 shutout victory.
It was all Kenyon in the first half, outshooting Wooster 13-2 with thanks to the legs of Tony Amolo and Mitsuyama. Amolo nearly gave Kenyon a lead just eight minutes into the contest with a shot that rocked the crossbar followed by a quick rip by Mitsuyama that was saved by Wooster keeper Matthew Canter. Alistair Flynn also rattled the Fighting Scots' cage in the 34th minute of play. Despite the hosts being on their heels for much of the first half, the Lords were unable to tickle the twine until the second stanza.
It did not take long for the Lords to make just enough of an adjustment to change their fortune coming out of the locker room. The Scots switched keepers at the half, inserting Aaron McKee into the contest where he would bear the brunt of the Lords' offense. Shortly after Wooster's Zach Jergan was given a yellow card for aggressive play, Nate Petrou made the Scots pay with a shots and a score at 56:57. The goal was the junior's first of the season.
Kenyon doubled up their lead and put the game out of reach at the same time when Mitsuyama connected for a goal on his fifth and final shot attempt. The goal was scored at 67:13 for his fifth of the season.
Each goal was assisted by sophomore Jeremiah Barnes for his fifth and sixth helpers of the year.
Kenyon (9-3-1, 2-0-1 NCAC) outshot Wooster (2-7-1, 0-3-0 NCAC) by a 19-7 margin, yet only had six well-placed shots in the second half. Sam Clougher made a pair of saves to keep the Scots off of the board.
Four of the Lords' final six matches will be played at home, starting with the next two against Denison University (Oct. 16) and Wabash College (Oct. 19). Kenyon and Denison will kick it off at 4:15 p.m. from Mavec Field in the Lords' next action.
