WOOSTER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's soccer team ended their three-game road trip on a high note with a big 2-1 road victory over The College of Wooster on Saturday afternoon. Two names familiar to the Kenyon statistics sheets marked them up once again.
Becca Romaine and
Maggie Smith each scored in the Ladies' win, which helped snap a three-match losing streak and keep them in the hunt for a spot in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Fighting Scots put pressure on the Ladies early by scoring the opening goal just 3:25 into the match. On Wooster's first shot attempt, the Ladies fell to a stroke of bad luck when Sophia Garfinkle's initial shot deflected off of a Kenyon defender and skipped into the goal.
Kenyon's fortunes began to sway back into their favor after they responded by applying some pressure of their own with an offense that returned two previously injured players. Maggie Smith and Katie Blake each put up shots that sailed high, but it was the reliable Becca Romaine that turned the tide with six minutes remaining in the opening half. Romaine drove into the box and was met by Wooster goalkeeper Sydney Hanzlik. Hanzlik sprinted aggressively to contest the ball but tripped Romaine as she attacked, prompting a penalty kick. Romaine set up shop and aimed for the lower-left corner of the cage, hitting the back of the net with precision to tie the game. The score was Romaine's team-leading fifth goal of the year.
The tie lasted less than three minutes into the second half before Smith score the eventual game-winning goal at 47:41. Romaine got in on the action once again, setting the freshman up with a near-perfect cross pass into the box. Smith got a head on it and pushed it home for the Ladies' second score of the match. It marked her fourth goal of the season.
Wooster (7-5-1, 2-1-0 NCAC) was not without opportunity to tie the score. In the last 30 minutes alone, Wooster recorded seven shot attempts. Lauren Wolfe return to her home between the pipes and kept the Fighting Scots out of the net for the duration, making three saves in that time. She finished with five saves to help Kenyon (3-8-1, 1-2-0 NCAC) pull down the win.
The season is still far from over with five North Coast Athletic Conference matches yet to play to close out the regular season. The next two matches will be back on the friendly confines of Mavec Field, beginning with rival Denison University on Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. Four of the Ladies' final five matches will be at home.
