GAMBIER, Ohio – Goals from
Jeremiah Barnes and
Nate Petrou lifted the Kenyon Lords soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Wabash College Little Giants during Saturday's chilly and soggy conference contest at rain-soaked Mavec Field.
The win improved Kenyon's overall record to 11-3-1 and its North Coast Athletic Conference mark to 4-0-1. The result sets up a huge showdown for Tuesday night, when the Lords travel to Ohio Wesleyan University to face the No. 1-ranked and undefeated Battling Bishops.
Although Kenyon started off slowly in Saturday's unfavorable conditions, the Lords eventually warmed up, maintained possession for most of the game, and scored goal number one prior to the halftime horn sounding. From the left, junior
Alex Christoff drew close enough to the goal line to bring the Wabash keeper out. When the move was made, Christoff then laced a pass across the box to Barnes, who had nothing but empty net in front of him. The goal was Barnes' third of the season and the assist was Christoff's fourth.
A little more than 18 minutes into the second half, Kenyon struck again. This time junior
Rei Mitsuyama, working from the right side, sent a pass to freshman
Tony Amolo in the center of the box. Amolo then flicked the ball over to Petrou, who was racing in from the left and knocked home the eventual game-winning goal.
Wabash (2-9-2, 0-4-1 NCAC) did score later in the second half to make things a bit closer, but the tally came on the Little Giants' only shot of the game. Riley Pelton headed in the goal off a corner delivered by Geno James.
While Wabash had just one shot, Kenyon piled up 18. The Lords also built a huge 11-1 advantage in corner kicks while winning their fourth straight contest.
