GAMBIER, Ohio – Becca Romaine reminded everybody in attendance at Tuesday evening's game that she is a serious scoring threat, hitting the back of the net twice in Kenyon College's 2-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan University. The duo of Romaine and Maggie Smith synced well and created numerous scoring chances while Lauren Wolfe returned between the posts and notched another shutout victory. The Ladies are still alive in the NCAC playoff hunt with the win.
Kenyon posted more than four times as many shots as the Battling Bishop, led by Smith's 11 shots. Seven of those were put on goal, including one chance late in the match that would have put Kenyon up by three goals when she went one-on-one with OWU goalkeeper Hannah Zacharias. Zacharias, as she did all game, came out aggressively and contested the shot and got her body on it from point-blank range for the save.
With Smith outshooting the entire OWU team on her own, it opened up scoring chances for Romaine. On her first goal, scored in the 21st minute, she received a pass from midfield by Madi Kim that created a one-on-one chance against Zacharias. With the keeper coming up to cut off the pass, Romaine turned on the jets and beat her to it, then tapped it over Zacharias' head to create a wide open shot toward the goal.
Her second goal came at 61:18 and was a product of crisp passing and an OWU defense that struggled to contain Romaine and any other scoring option presented by the Ladies. Off a pass that came from the far sideline, Kenyon's Lucy Evert saw multiple OWU defense converge on her and quickly decided to pass it off to Romaine who slipped behind the defense. Once again, Romaine found herself in a personal battle with Zacharias, and like the previous meeting Romaine came out the victor. Zacharias came out to challenge and dove in an attempt to cut off the shot, but Romaine went low to the near-side corner to beat her for the insurance goal. The assist was Evert's first of the season, as well as the first of the sophomore's career.
Lauren Wolfe was flawless in goal for the Ladies, stopping each of the two shots the Bishops put on goal. She did not have much action as the Ladies' offense was busy keeping the ball behind their 26 total shots. Ohio Wesleyan managed just six shots in 90 minutes of play. The shutout was Wolfe's second of the year and 15th of her career.
Kenyon (5-9-2, 3-3-1 NCAC) is still mathematically alive in the NCAC Tournament picture. While much depends on the outcomes of other matches around the league, Kenyon must win their final regular season match against Oberlin College (4-12, 0-6 NCAC) to have a chance to advance. The 2013 NCAC Women's Soccer Tournament will consist of the top four teams in the conference standings. Currently, Allegheny College and DePauw University possess the top two spots with a cluster competing for the third and fourth spots that include Wittenberg University, Denison University, The College of Wooster, and the Ladies. Of those teams in contention for the final two spots, Kenyon has defeated two of the three.
The Ladies will host Oberlin at Mavec Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. as part of a Kenyon Soccer doubleheader. The men will host Oberlin as well, following the Ladies' match.
