Box Score
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Kenyon College senior
Maureen Hirt poured in 30 points Friday night, but her efforts alone were not enough to yield a Ladies' win in the 2013-14 women's basketball season opener. The Ladies went cold in the second half of play and opened the door for the Olivet College Comets to claim a 91-80 victory at the Harrington Center on the campus of The College of Mount Saint Joseph.
Hirt, who averaged 16.3 points per game last season, scored her 30 Friday on 9-of-21 shooting from the floor. She was 6-of-13 on three-point attempts and was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw stripe. She also grabbed three rebounds and dished out a team-high six assists.
Additional scoring support for the Ladies came from senior point guard
Maggie Boelter and senior post
Autumn Anderson. Boelter was 4-of-9 from long distance and dialed up 15 points. Anderson, who missed all of last season with an injury, returned to the paint, where she tossed in an accurate 18 points. From the floor, Anderson was 6-of-10 and from the line she matched Hirt's 6-for-6 performance.
During the first 20 minutes of game action, the Ladies shot 17-of-31 (54.8 percent). That pace fell off steeply in the second half, as they were just 9-of-29 (31.0 percent).
Olivet led for nearly all of the first half, but never by more than six points. With under a minute left, Hirt dropped in a three-pointer and Anderson followed with a layup. That spurt got Kenyon to the break with a 48-47 advantage, just its third lead of the game.
Kenyon (0-1) stuck with Olivet (1-0) for the first seven minutes of the second half, but then things began to unravel for the Ladies. At the 13:21 mark, Hirt hit another three-pointer, however, the Ladies would not score another field goal until there was 5:47 left. During that stretch, the Ladies did connect on a few free throws, but Olivet rode out a 19-4 run that all but sealed the outcome.
The loss sends the Ladies into consolation game of the MSJ Tip-Off Tournament. That game will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday and the Ladies' opponent will be the host Lions, who lost to Muskingum University, 80-59, in the other Friday-night game.
