Maureen Hirt and the Kenyon College women's basketball team rebounded well from their opening-day loss by rolling over the College of Mount St. Joseph Lions, 89-69, in Saturday afternoon's consolation game of the two-day MSJ Tip-Off Tournament. Hirt paced the Ladies with 21 points behind another excellent shooting night.
The Ladies started strongly, going on a 12-3 run to put the hosts in an early hole. Senior guard
Maggie Boelter began to break it open with a three ball before Hirt hit back-to-back shots, capping off the run with another trey.
Kenyon (1-1) extended its lead midway through the first when Hirt continued shooting with a hot hand. Following Sarah Hobbs' three-point answer to make for a 10-point game, 23-13, Hirt went off with two more three-point makes, the second coming off a fastbreak generated by one of her three steals. The 16-point lead was the largest the Ladies possessed in the first half and was trimmed to 12 before the end of the frame.
Just as the first half had started, the Ladies raced out on another big run to begin the second. Hirt continued to shine by contributing eight points in Kenyon's 14-2 run. Lauren Kriete started the rally with her lone field goal of the night, nailing a three-pointer. Hirt then came out and scored the next eight points with two three-balls and a layup off another self-created fastbreak.
Kenyon's largest lead was 33 points with about 10 minutes remaining in the game. That margin was struck when Avery Anderson hit consecutive field goals, one from long range, and sophomore guard Molly Rubin got in on the action with a steal and layup off the fastbreak.
Mount St. Joseph began chipping back into that lead once personnel changes were made late in the contest, but the Lions never got closer than 18 points.
Hirt finished with 21 points to lead all scorers on the evening. She also had a team-high six rebounds and, for her efforts over the last two days, was named to the All-Tournament Team. Anderson finished with a career-high 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field.
The Ladies excelled shooting from all areas of the court, hitting 45.8 percent of all their shots while going 11-for-21 (.524) from distance. Kenyon held the rebounding advantage, 49-39, and bested the Lions in multiple offensive categories, including points in the paint (32-24), second chance points (14-8), and fastbreak points (10-6).
Meredith Hartfiel paced Mount St. Joseph with 16 points behind a 4-for-5 effort from three-point range. Brooke Mosler added 14 points and a team-high six rebounds.

The Ladies will play their next three games at home beginning with a non-conference contest against Ohio Northern University on November 19. That game will be played at Tomsich Arena with a 7:30 p.m. start time.
